Articles - a , an, the

Article kelimesinin tam karşılığı olacak bir Türkçe kelime yoktur. Ancak bazı kaynaklarda tanımlık olarak bahsi geçer.

İngilizce’de 3 tane article vardır. a, an ve the. Bunlardan a ve an indefinite articles (belirsiz article) the ise definite article (belirli article) olarak bilinirler. Bunlar haricinde ismin hiç bir article almaması durumuna ise zero article denir.

Öncelikle indefinite articles hakkında bilgi verelim. Yukarıda da bahsettiğimiz gibi bunlar “a” ve “an” articlelarıdır. Önüne a veya an almış isim herhangi gruba ait herhangi bir sayılabilir tekil isimdir. Örnek verelim.

a car (bir araba ama herhangi bir araba, özellikle bir araba kast edilmemiş)
an apple (aynı şekilde yine herhangi bir elma)

Peki, neye göre a neye göre an getireceğiz ? Çok basit, eğer isim sessiz harf ile başlıyorsa “a” , sesli harf ile başlıyorsa “an” getiriyoruz. Örneğin,

a pencil, a table, a ticket
an egg, an elephant, an umbrella

* a veya an seçimi yapılırken, yazılıştan çok ses önemlidir. Bu nedenle sesli harfle başlamalarına rağmen, telaffuzda sessiz harfle başlar şekilde telaffuz edildikleri için kimi isimler an yerine a alabilir, veya tam tersi an yerine a articleı ile birlikte kullanılabilirler. Örneğin, user (kullanıcı) kelimesi an user değil, a user olarak kullanılır çünkü “yuzır” şeklinde telaffuz edilir. Tam tersi hour kelimesi “aur” şeklinde telaffuz edildiğinden a hour değil, an hour olarak kullanılır. Bu örnekleri çoğaltmak mümkündür.

** Dikkat etmemiz gereken bir diğer nokta ise, ismin bir sıfat alması durumunda, kullanılacak olan article, ismin değil, kendisinden hemen sonra gelen sıfatın ilk harfine göre belirlenir. Örneğin, a broken egg (bir kırık yumurta) veya an unusual problem (bir sıradışı problem) gibi..

Definite article “the” konusuna geçecek olursak, şöyle tanımlayabiliriz. İngilizce’de “the” articleını konuşan veya dinleyen yada yazan ve okuyan her iki kişi tarafından da hangi belirli nesne veya kişiden bahsediliğinin bilindiği durumlarda kullanırız.Örnek vermek gerekirse..

The girl I met was very beautiful. (Tanıştığım kız çok güzeldi)

Ayrıca daha önceden bahsettiğimiz şeyler için de “the” kullanırız. Örneğin arkadaşımızın biri kız, biri erkek, iki çocuğu olduğunu, kızın 5, erkeğin ise 10 yaşında olduğunu söyleyerek buna bir örnek verelim.

My friend has two children; a girl and a boy.The girl is five and the boy is ten years old. (ilk cümlede bir kızı ve bir erkek çocuğu olduğunu söyledi, ikinci cümlede ise bahsedilen kız ve erkeğin kimler olduğu hem konuşan hem de dinleyen kişi tarafından bilindiği için “the” kullandı.)

“the” aricleının coğrafik kullanımı çoğu kez karıştırılır. Dilerseniz kurallar halinde bu kullanımları vererek bu dersi sonlandıralım.

Bunlardan önce “the” KULLANMA :

  • The Netherlands (Hollanda) ve The US (Birleşik Devletler) dışındaki ülke isimlerinden önce.
  • Kasaba, şehir veya eyalet isimlerinden önce.
  • Cadde isimlerinden önce.
  • Grup göller haricinde tekil göllerden bahsederken.
  • Sıradağlar haricindeki dağ isimlerinden önce.
  • Kıta isimlerinden önce.
  • Zincir adalar haricindeki ada isimlerinden önce.

Bunlardan önce, “the” KULLAN :

  • Akarsu, okyanus ve deniz isimlerinden önce.
  • Çöl, orma, körfez ve yarımada isimlerinden önce.
  • Ekvator, Kuzey Kutbu gibi yerkürenin belirli kesimlerinden bahsederken.
  • Orta Doğu, Batı gibi coğrafi konum belirtirken.

    4. I have never seen __a_ UFO. Ufo bir çok kısaltmada olduğu gibi harflerini spell etme şeklinde okunur.( yu,ef O ) o yüzden “a” alır.
